Renowned marathoner Eliud Kipchoge has broken his silence for the first time since the passing of fellow long-distance athlete Kelvin Kiptum, shedding light on their shared journey and the impact of Kiptum's untimely demise.
Speaking from Tokyo, where he is preparing for his second return to the Tokyo Marathon, Kipchoge addressed the press on Friday, March 1, offering his condolences and reminiscing about Kiptum's promising career.
"His career was in high spirits, and he was truly performing at an elite level," Kipchoge remarked, reflecting on Kiptum's remarkable achievements.
While Kipchoge did not personally attend Kiptum's funeral, he expressed solidarity with his fellow athlete and acknowledged the void left by his passing.
"There were high expectations," Kipchoge acknowledged, emphasizing the anticipation surrounding Kiptum's future endeavors.
As preparations for the Tokyo Marathon intensify, Kipchoge paid tribute to Kiptum's memory, recognizing the impact of his absence on the upcoming event and the broader athletic community.
"The July 2024 Olympics won't be the same without him," Kipchoge lamented, highlighting the significance of Kiptum's presence on the global stage.
Amidst the somber atmosphere, international athletes, including Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, joined in honoring Kiptum's legacy. Recalling Kipchoge's renowned quote, "Nothing is Impossible," Hassan expressed disbelief at Kiptum's passing and praised his unwavering determination.
"He was so young, and he was demonstrating to the world what was achievable. It's incredibly difficult," Hassan remarked, echoing the sentiments of athletes worldwide.
Both Kelvin Kiptum and Eliud Kipchoge were poised to make their Olympic debut, representing Kenya in the upcoming Paris Olympics. However, following Kiptum's tragic passing, Athletics Kenya faces the challenge of finding a replacement, leaving athletes with limited time to adjust before the event.
As the athletic community mourns the loss of one of its own, Eliud Kipchoge's reflections underscore the enduring legacy of Kelvin Kiptum, whose spirit and achievements continue to inspire athletes around the globe.
