Today marks the solemn farewell to Kelvin Kiptum, the esteemed World Marathon record holder, who was tragically taken from us in a fatal road accident in Eldoret. Born on December 2, 1999, Kiptum's remarkable legacy will be honored as he is laid to rest in his hometown of Chepsamo village.

Leading the nation in this final farewell is President William Ruto, joined by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi. The funeral service is attended by scores of fellow athletes, paying tribute to their fallen comrade.

Standing at an estimated 1.8 meters tall and weighing 65 kilograms, Kiptum will be interred in a dignified beige-colored casket, accompanied by floral tributes, a symbol of our collective grief and respect.

Kelvin Kiptum leaves behind his beloved wife, Asenath Cheruto Rotich, and their two children. His untimely demise, alongside his coach Gervais Hakizimana, has left a void in the world of athletics.

Just days before his tragic passing, Kiptum's extraordinary marathon record of 2 hours and 35 seconds was officially recognized by the International Track Federation World Athletics. His groundbreaking achievement of completing a marathon in under 2 hours, 1 minute, set a new standard in the sport, surpassing even the great Eliud Kipchoge's mark.

The loss of Kelvin Kiptum is keenly felt, especially as he was poised to compete in the upcoming Rotterdam Marathon on April 14, 2024. His absence will be deeply felt by his fans, fellow athletes, and the entire nation.

In addition to the outpouring of grief from the sporting community, political leaders from the area have also gathered to pay their respects, underscoring Kiptum's profound impact beyond the realm of athletics.
