Tragedy struck on Friday morning along the Sagana-Karatina road when a speeding milk pickup fatally ran over a 32-year-old mother and her 9-year-old son. The two were waiting for a school bus when the vehicle veered off the road, killing them instantly.

Moses Koskei, the Kirinyaga Sub-county police commissioner, confirmed the incident and stated that the driver had surrendered to the authorities at Kiangwaci Police Station. "The bodies have been taken to Kibugi Funeral Home for postmortem, and the vehicle has been towed to Sagana Police Station," Koskei said.

The accident sparked outrage among local residents, who took to the highway to protest the lack of speed bumps in the area, blaming the road contractor for failing to meet safety requirements despite the presence of several schools.

“We have repeatedly written to the contractor asking for speed bumps, but our concerns have been ignored," one protester said. "Accidents are common here due to speeding vehicles, and the failure to address this issue has cost us more lives."

This tragic accident is part of a growing crisis on Kenyan roads. The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reports that over 2,000 people have died and more than 10,166 others have been injured in 11,502 crashes in the first half of 2024 alone, raising concerns about road safety and reckless driving across the country.
