A General Service Unit (GSU) officer stationed at State House, Nairobi, was killed on Monday, October 13, in a bizarre spear attack that has left security agencies and the public in shock.
According to police sources, the officer was on duty outside Gate D when a man armed with a spear struck him on the left side of the chest. The officer collapsed as his colleagues scrambled to respond.
The attacker, described as a middle-aged man, reportedly approached the gate posing as a street dweller. Witnesses said he carried a large sack, which is believed to have concealed the weapon.
“He waited until two officers were distracted while clearing a vehicle, then suddenly attacked,” a senior officer familiar with the case told reporters on condition of anonymity.
The site of the assault is a security clearance zone for pedestrians and motorists heading into State House — one of the most heavily guarded locations in the country.
The injured officer was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
The suspect was swiftly subdued and arrested by other GSU officers. Police sources said he muttered that he had been “sent by Satan” to carry out the attack. Detectives are now working to establish his identity, background, and mental state.
At the time of the incident, President William Ruto was reportedly preparing to leave State House for a scheduled trip to Konza City in Machakos County. Officials have not confirmed whether the president was inside the compound during the attack.
This marks the second killing of a GSU officer within 24 hours, after another officer was found dead on Sunday, following an altercation at a hotel near Mombasa Road.
According to a police report, the officer, who was guarding the JKIA perimeter fence, had stopped at the hotel to charge his phone. A supervisor later told investigators he saw a man strangling the officer during a scuffle. The officer’s body was later recovered from a water-filled trench nearby.
Security officials have not linked the two killings, but the incidents have raised fresh questions about the safety of Kenya’s elite police units and the growing number of attacks on law enforcement officers.
An internal investigation is under way, with police sources indicating that psychological evaluations and motive assessments will be key to understanding the shocking spear assault.
