Top officials from Moi University are under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for alleged embezzlement of public funds amounting to Ksh 2.2 billion in infrastructural projects. The officials began recording statements at EACC offices in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, on Tuesday.
Vice-Chancellor Isaac Kosgei, Chief Accountant Egla Samoei, Head of Procurement Wilson Bett, and Head of Development Unit Moses Kipkulei were summoned as part of the probe into the alleged misuse of funds and corruption at the institution.
EACC confirmed that Bett and Kipkulei were being held at their Eldoret offices as they provided statements. Samoei also recorded her statement on Tuesday, while Prof. Kosgei was expected to appear before investigators on Wednesday.
Allegations and Document Requests
The anti-corruption agency is investigating allegations of financial mismanagement and obstruction of justice. The Vice-Chancellor has been accused of attempting to interfere with the investigation by withholding critical documents despite repeated reminders.
In a summons letter dated November 14, EACC directed Moi University to submit various documents, including approved budgets from the past six financial years and minutes from 18 special council meetings, by close of business Tuesday.
Investigation Status
The EACC’s actions come amid growing concerns over governance and financial accountability in Kenyan universities. The probe is expected to shed light on the extent of the alleged corruption and whether public funds intended for infrastructural development were misappropriated.
The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for leadership at Moi University and for broader efforts to curb corruption in public institutions.
