One person died, and 30 others sustained critical injuries on Tuesday after a train derailed near Tata Chemicals in Kajiado. The train, full of passengers, lost control and derailed while attempting to cross a metal bridge.

Sources close to the incident reported that the derailment caused the train to lose balance and roll over, trapping several passengers. St John Ambulance confirmed receiving reports of multiple casualties and had dispatched a rescue team to assist those trapped inside the wreckage.

"A passenger train has derailed in Kajiado near Tata Chemicals - Kajiado Plant. Casualties reported. Emergency response teams currently heading to the scene," announced St John Ambulance.

The casualties, including the deceased and the injured, were rushed to Kajiado Sub-County Hospital, with others taken to Kitengela Medical Centre and St Crispin Medical Centre.

A similar incident occurred in September 2022 when a train derailed along the Kakamega-Kisumu railway line. According to Kenya Railways, the accident was caused by poor drainage and ongoing road construction, leading to heavy siltation at the railway intersection. No casualties were reported in that accident, although it caused significant traffic disruption along the Kisumu-Kakamega highway.
