A devastating accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway has claimed the lives of ten individuals, including a 2-year-old child, following a collision involving five motor vehicles. The tragic incident unfolded at approximately 8:30 pm in the Salama area.

Dr. Jane Mwende, the Medical Superintendent at Sultan Amud sub-county hospital, confirmed that nine bodies were brought to the facility by police on Monday night. Sadly, the young child, who was in critical condition, succumbed to their injuries.

Additionally, Mwende stated that twelve individuals were admitted to the hospital with injuries, with some later referred to Makindu Hospital for further treatment.

A police report from Salama Police Station revealed that while four bodies were promptly recovered, five others were found trapped within the wreckage. Heavy rains in the area hindered rescue efforts, complicating the detachment of the vehicles.

The collision transpired when the driver of a lorry bound for Mombasa failed to maintain its designated traffic lane, abruptly veering to the right. Consequently, the lorry collided with a matatu, propelling it into another vehicle and triggering the chain reaction involving five vehicles.
