Mumbai, India - In a stunning turn of events, a 40-year-old Kenyan woman was apprehended on Sunday at Mumbai Airport for attempting to smuggle gold worth Ksh29 million. The arrest was made by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) after the woman's suspicious behavior caught the attention of airport authorities.

Upon closer inspection, AIU officers made a startling discovery. The woman had ingeniously concealed 17 pieces of 22-carat gold melted bars within her innerwear. Further investigation revealed that she also had jewelry composed of 21-carat gold hidden on her person.

The woman believed to reside on Captain Mungai Street in Nairobi, found herself immediately taken into custody and placed under a 14-day judicial detention. Astonishingly, she was carrying a United Kingdom passport valid until 2032, according to Indian authorities.

It was disclosed that she had departed from Nairobi on September 30, destined for Mumbai. AIU officers suspect that this arrest may not be an isolated incident, as they have strong reasons to believe that the Kenyan woman may be connected to a series of smuggling cases.

The escalating cases of drug and contraband smuggling through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) have raised concerns. A recent media investigation conducted on August 31 revealed that over Ksh1.2 billion worth of contraband had already been seized in 2023, all intended for the Indian black market.

India's Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has issued an alert, indicating the presence of a powerful cartel in Kenya involved in smuggling contraband into the Asian country. The influx of drugs from Kenya has prompted heightened security measures at India's main entry points and increased profiling of passengers arriving from Kenya. The authorities are determined to thwart these illicit activities and protect the integrity of their borders.
