Nairobi, August 9, 2023 - The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has clarified the reasons behind Kisii University's status as the top choice for 2022 KCSE candidates in the placement cycle. The university's affordability and diverse range of programs are key factors contributing to its popularity among students.
A Preferred Choice for Students
Kisii University emerged as the most preferred institution by KCSE candidates, with a significant number of students selecting it for their higher education journey. KUCCPS CEO Agnes Wahome explained that the university's appeal lies in its wide range of available programs suitable for students who scored C+ and above in their exams. Additionally, Kisii University offers courses at an affordable cost compared to other institutions.
Factors Influencing Student Choices
According to Wahome, two main factors influenced students' choices during the placement process: the minimum requirement for specific courses and the cost of education. The university's programs, which require a minimum grade of C+, attracted a substantial number of applicants. Students also considered the cost of education as a significant factor when making their choices.
Affordability and Program Diversity
A comparison of tuition fees on the KUCCPS website revealed that Kisii University offers affordable options for various degree programs. For example, a Bachelor of Arts degree costs Ksh122,485 annually at Kisii University, making it a more budget-friendly choice compared to other institutions.
Strong Performance and Regional Excellence
The region where Kisii University is located displayed exceptional performance in the 2022 KCSE results. Several schools from the area secured positions within the top 100 nationally. Notably, Nyambaria High School garnered attention for achieving 28 A plains and a 100% transition rate to university. The region's improved mean grades highlighted its commitment to quality education.
Investigating Exam Performance
Despite the region's remarkable performance, concerns were raised about schools that traditionally had average performances suddenly recording a significant number of candidates with A grades. These reports prompted the Senate Education Committee to initiate investigations into possible exam malpractices. Education CS Ezekiel Machogu dismissed the allegations, emphasizing that the situation was not as drastic as portrayed by the media.
Looking Forward
Kisii University's popularity among KCSE candidates reflects the importance of affordable education and diverse program offerings. As investigations into exam performance continue, the education sector remains committed to ensuring transparency, accountability, and quality education for all students.
