Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja surrendered himself to police on Monday, July 20.

Citizen TV was the first to report that the senator who was under police radar and was wanted for allegedly breaking curfew orders presented himself at Kilimani Police Station.

The broadcaster further revealed that the senator was being represented by his Makueni counterpart Mutula Kilonzo.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Sakaja arrived in the company of his lawyer and another small crowd who escorted him to the police station’s door.

Speaking to the press at the station, he conceded to breaking the Covid-19 directives issued by the Ministry of Health.

“I take responsibility for having flouted the COVID-19 rules, I was outside my home past 9PM…It is regrettable but all of us make mistakes,” stated Sakaja.

The senator had earlier denied claims, via a tweet, that he spent the night of Friday, July 17 at Kilimani Police Station, Nairobi.

The senator was being sought by police to record a statement after he reportedly went missing.

An earlier report by The Standard indicated that Sakaja was being shielded by a high-ranking government official and that he had been holed up at the civil servant’s Karen home hence evading arrest.

In the Friday arrest of the senator, the police accused him of resisting arrest, being violent and inciting others who were found at the club along Dennis Pritt Road.

“In the course of his arrest, others escaped. While in custody, he was asked to be given a free bond but refused to leave cells threatening to transfer all officers within 24 hours,” read the police report.

A video that surfaced online later on showed Sakaja in a police station asking for his phone.
