Wahu Shares Unjust Housing Discrimination Experience as a Musician

Renowned singer Wahu Kagwi has opened up about an unfortunate incident where she was denied tenancy of an apartment solely because of her profession as a musician, highlighting the need for acceptance and understanding.

Recalling her younger years, Wahu fondly remembered finding a lovely one-bedroom apartment in her 20s. The apartment happened to belong to a Christian organization, and she was excited about starting a new chapter in her life.

After arranging the down payment and signing the contract, Wahu's joy was shattered when she received a phone call informing her that she could no longer move in. Although no reasons were provided, Wahu was convinced that the decision was made based on her identity as a musician.

Expressing her disappointment, Wahu shared, "I struggled and put together the down payment and signed the contract. Then one day, someone called me and told me I couldn't move in. The reason being that I'm a musician (they didn't say it to my face, but it was obvious). Unfortunately, I was judged as a single young girl who loves to sing... so maybe they thought I would bring men over or that I would be drinking excessively... I don't know... a look they didn't want to associate with. So even without giving me a chance to show them who I was, I was 'evicted' before I moved in."

Fifteen years later, the same institution approached Wahu with an offer to be their brand ambassador, a proposition she declined despite having forgiven them and moved on. She explained that accepting the role didn't feel right considering her previous experience.

Wahu believes that actions speak louder than words and questions whether the church should embrace those they perceive as "wayward" and extend compassion, just as Jesus did. She emphasizes that claiming to be a Christian holds no value if one's actions do not align with the teachings of love, acceptance, and non-judgment.

While expressing gratitude for being raised in a church that taught her not to generalize all Christians based on the actions of a few, Wahu encourages everyone to uphold values such as love, kindness, understanding, and non-judgment. She strives to be a beacon of these virtues and urges others to do the same.

By sharing her personal experience, Wahu raises awareness about housing discrimination based on one's profession and advocates for a society where individuals are accepted and judged on their character rather than preconceived notions.
