Renowned journalist, lawyer, and businessman Ken Mijungu has unexpectedly parted ways with Cape Media’s TV47, just weeks after being unveiled as a new anchor at the station. The abrupt decision marks a surprising turn in Mijungu’s career, raising speculation about what led to the reversal of his employment.

Termination of Service Agreement

According to an internal communication from Cape Media management, the station decided to revoke Mijungu’s contract signed on January 31, 2025. The termination took effect from February 22, 2025.

“Having considered the matter, management has taken the decision to revoke the Service Agreement dated 31st January 2025. This decision takes effect from the 22nd February 2025. This development notwithstanding, we shall be pleased to engage with you on future possibilities. Management wishes you the best in your future endeavors,” read part of the official statement from Cape Media.

The station has not provided specific reasons for the sudden contract revocation, leading to speculation within media circles about possible underlying factors. Industry insiders suggest that internal strategic shifts, contractual disagreements, or even political influences could have played a role.

Background: Mijungu’s Short-Lived TV47 Tenure

Mijungu was unveiled as part of TV47’s ambitious expansion plan, which also included moving its DStv channel position from 268 to 274, a slot previously held by KTN News. His appointment was announced via TV47’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on February 7, 2025.

“Cape Media is happy to announce that Ken Mijungu will be joining the TV47 team, on the same day the station announced that TV47 will be moving from Channel 268 to Channel 274 on DStv from 12th February 2025. These come as part of the plans to make TV47 Bigger, Better and Bolder,” the station stated in its announcement.

This move was seen as a major coup for the fast-rising station, which has been positioning itself as a challenger to established players such as KTN News, NTV, and Citizen TV.

Mijungu’s Media Career: A Distinguished Journey

Ken Mijungu has built a reputation as a sharp political journalist with an impressive media portfolio spanning several leading news organizations. He began his career at CCTV Africa (now CGTN Africa) before transitioning to Mediamax Network Ltd. He later joined Nation Media Group (NTV), where he hosted Sidebar, a widely followed political talk show featuring in-depth discussions with key figures in governance and policy.

In 2020, Mijungu moved to Standard Media Group (KTN News), where he took on roles as a news anchor and political affairs analyst. During his tenure at KTN, he was a key player in political reporting, especially during Kenya’s 2022 general elections, but his specific shows at the station were not extensively documented.

Aside from journalism, Mijungu is a trained lawyer with a law degree from Moi University. He has successfully balanced his media career with business ventures, notably a car hire company, which he has managed alongside his television work.

A Career of Highs and Lows

Throughout his career, Mijungu has covered major national and international news events, traveling to over 56 countries. His ability to conduct incisive interviews and his sharp political analysis have earned him a strong reputation in the industry.

However, he has also faced setbacks. His unceremonious exit from NTV in 2020 was part of a broader retrenchment at the station, attributed to financial restructuring. His recent exit from KTN News in early 2025 was framed as a voluntary move, though industry observers noted shifting dynamics at Standard Media Group, including a declining revenue base and a restructuring process affecting newsroom personnel.

What Next for Ken Mijungu?

With this latest setback, the question remains: What next for Ken Mijungu? Given his vast experience in both journalism and law, he has multiple career paths he could explore. His past engagements suggest he could return to independent content creation, venture deeper into legal practice, or even explore opportunities in media consultancy.

Moreover, his abrupt departure from TV47 does not rule out the possibility of future collaborations with the station or a swift return to mainstream media, should the right opportunity arise.

As the media landscape in Kenya continues to evolve, Mijungu’s next steps will be keenly watched by industry players and audiences alike.
