The People’s Liberation Party leader, Martha Karua, has accused President William Ruto of contributing to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s failed bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship.

Speaking during a radio interview on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Karua claimed that despite Odinga enjoying significant support across Africa, Ruto’s negative reputation affected the outcome.

“Raila had overwhelming support, but the one who accompanied him, President Ruto, has a bad reputation across Africa. His involvement in internal conflicts in other countries played a role,” Karua stated.

Her remarks came a day after Odinga addressed his loss for the first time, expressing gratitude to President Ruto and other leaders for their support. Speaking at State House Mombasa on Monday, February 24, Odinga said:

“I am delighted to be back home. I feel very happy and grateful to be in Kenya again. I want to thank everybody—the President, the Deputy, the ministers, leaders, and Kenyans generally—who walked with us on this journey.”

Odinga also dismissed claims that the government spent Ksh13 billion on his campaign, saying the amount was grossly exaggerated.

"I have seen people talking about Ksh13 billion being spent on my campaign. I don’t know what world these people live in or if they even understand what a billion means," he remarked.

He clarified that the government only facilitated transport to and from the countries he visited, while some nations covered accommodation costs.

"Nothing can be further from the truth; no such amount was spent. The government only assisted with transport, and some host countries generously provided accommodation."

Meanwhile, President Ruto praised Odinga, calling him a "fantastic candidate" and commending his dedication during the campaign.

“I have supported many people before, but we had an exceptional candidate. Raila was present, met all his appointments, and effectively lobbied for his candidature.

“It is a proud moment for us to welcome you back home and continue working together to drive national development, strengthen nation-building, and enhance prosperity and transformation,” Ruto added.
