New CCTV footage has shed light on the final moments before a crash that killed former Lugari MP and cabinet minister Cyrus Jirongo on the Nairobi–Nakuru highway.

The footage, recorded at a petrol station along the busy road, captures Jirongo’s movements minutes before the fatal collision. It shows a quiet stretch of highway moments before tragedy struck.

According to the time stamp, Jirongo’s white saloon car entered the station at 2:18am from the Nairobi side. He drove past the fuel pumps without stopping. Thirty-four seconds later, he made a sharp U-turn and rejoined the highway, heading back towards Nairobi.

Just over a minute later, at around 2:19:25am, a large bus, believed to be the one involved in the crash, appears in the footage travelling towards Nakuru. Its headlights are on, and it is moving at speed.

Seconds later, the bus collides head-on with Jirongo’s car.

The impact is severe. The footage shows the bus pushing the saloon car along the tarmac for roughly 25 metres. The smaller vehicle spins violently before coming to rest on the Nakuru-bound side of the road.

Smoke is seen rising from the wreckage.

At about 2:20am, another vehicle travelling towards Nairobi passes the scene, briefly lighting up the twisted remains. The footage does not show anyone immediately alighting from the bus to assist.

Moments later, a lone figure is seen approaching the scene. Nearly 49 minutes after the crash, at around 2:48am, a small crowd begins to gather as traffic builds up along the highway.

Other vehicles are later seen diverting as congestion worsens. Police officers eventually arrive to clear the wreckage and restore movement on the road.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is still piecing together what happened. Detectives are reviewing the footage alongside witness statements as they seek to establish the full circumstances of the crash, including whether Jirongo was alone in the vehicle.

Authorities have not yet released details on the bus driver or commented on possible charges, saying the investigation remains ongoing.

Jirongo, a prominent political figure and businessman, died at the scene. His death has shocked supporters and colleagues, many of whom have called for a thorough and transparent investigation.
