President William Ruto on Monday laid the foundation stone for the Affordable Housing Project at Konza Technopolis, marking a significant step in Kenya’s push to expand access to low-cost housing and boost economic growth.

The head of state, joined by senior government officials and local leaders, also launched a series of strategic projects within the Konza Smart City. He mingled with residents, inspected ongoing works, and even joined construction workers briefly — a gesture that drew applause from the gathered crowd.

Konza, a flagship project under Kenya’s Vision 2030, is envisioned as a world-class smart city that integrates green energy, technology, and sustainable infrastructure. The project aims to attract global investors and foster a digital economy at the heart of Machakos County.

“We are building not just houses, but hope — communities where every Kenyan can live with dignity,” President Ruto said during the ceremony.

The Affordable Housing Project at Konza is part of the government’s broader Affordable Housing Programme, which seeks to bridge the housing deficit while creating jobs for thousands of youth in construction and related sectors.

Officials said the housing initiative at Konza would feature modern, eco-friendly units designed to accommodate workers, students, and investors drawn to the growing innovation hub.

Ruto highlighted that the government’s plan relies heavily on public-private partnerships, ensuring that investors, developers, and local communities all play a role in shaping Konza’s future.

“This project is proof that when government and the private sector work together, we can deliver meaningful change,” he said.

The President also reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that Konza becomes Africa’s largest smart city — a “nerve centre” for innovation, green technology, and digital enterprise.

As construction begins, the government hopes the Konza Affordable Housing Project will not only provide homes but also symbolise the country’s ambition to merge technology with inclusive urban development.
