Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has expressed concerns about the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the country’s electoral processes, warning of both its potential benefits and risks.
Speaking on Tuesday, December 3, at a multi-sectoral forum on AI and elections, Kalonzo acknowledged the promise of AI in enhancing the speed and security of elections but emphasized the risks of misuse.
"AI is at once an opportunity and a challenge. Used well, AI can make the electoral processes faster, more secure, and scientifically verifiable. But badly used, it blurs the lines between truth and falsehood, fostering manipulation. This, in the context of elections, could have grave implications,” he stated.
Kalonzo, a declared 2027 presidential aspirant, underlined the need to employ technology responsibly to build credibility in the electoral process, referencing the contentious outcomes of Kenya’s last three general elections.
He also criticized delays in reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), highlighting it as a critical national issue. “The reconstitution of the IEBC should not be delayed any further. It’s essential for safeguarding the democratic integrity of our country,” the former Vice President remarked.
Kalonzo’s concerns were echoed by U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires David Gosney, who stressed that Kenya’s democracy is at risk without a functional electoral body.
ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo, representing the government, supported leveraging technology to enhance election processes. However, he refrained from addressing the stalled IEBC reconstitution directly.
Progress in rebuilding the IEBC has been hampered by legal disputes, with a nine-member selection panel yet to finalize candidates to fill the vacant positions caused by dismissals and resignations. This delay has left some regions without full electoral leadership as mandated by the constitution.
As debates continue, the integration of AI in electoral systems remains a divisive topic, with stakeholders grappling with how to balance innovation with integrity.
