Kenya's candidate for African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, is set to unveil his strategic vision for the AU at a high-profile event in Addis Ababa on Friday, November 8, 2024. The event, which will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the AU Multipurpose Hall, will gather AU Member States representatives, Regional Economic Communities, business leaders, youth and women's groups, and civil society organizations.
This presentation marks a significant step in Odinga’s campaign for AU leadership, following the official endorsement of his candidacy by President William Ruto on August 27, 2024, at Nairobi's State House. The launch received strong backing from East African Community leaders, underscoring regional confidence in Odinga’s ability to lead the AU through an era of rapid growth and transformation.
Odinga’s vision aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, focusing on a pan-African approach to achieving a prosperous, self-sufficient Africa. His top priorities include economic transformation, infrastructure development, intra-African trade, financial independence, gender equity, agricultural modernization, climate action, youth empowerment, digital transformation, and peace and security. His emphasis on collaboration reflects a commitment to African unity and integration.
In addition to the Friday event, Odinga will hold a media luncheon at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Addis Ababa on Saturday, November 9, at 12:30 p.m. This session aims to offer further insights into his agenda and provide media representatives with the opportunity to discuss his strategic vision for the AU.
