A recent survey by research firm INFOTRAK has named Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as the leading candidate to replace Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, should he be impeached.
The report, which gathered opinions from Kenyans across the country, revealed that 20% of respondents favored CS Kindiki, placing him far ahead of other potential successors. Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi both garnered 5%, tying for second place.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro followed closely with 4%, while former Prime Minister Raila Odinga surprised many by appearing as a candidate with 2% support.
The survey also showed gender and age preferences, with 24% of male respondents favoring Kindiki compared to 16% of females. Additionally, voters aged 36-45 were the most supportive of the Interior CS, with 21% backing him as Gachagua’s potential replacement.
Respondents cited Kindiki’s experience, track record, and competence as the primary reasons for his high rating. However, in terms of experience and performance, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro was rated highest by 43% of respondents.
Despite the top contenders, 60% of respondents reported being undecided or unsure of who should replace the deputy president.
This report comes amid growing political tensions, as DP Gachagua prepares to defend himself against impeachment charges. Following a vote by the National Assembly, where 182 MPs supported the motion, the Senate is now set to hold a plenary hearing. Gachagua’s legal team is ready to challenge the charges in both the Senate and, if necessary, the Supreme Court.
