The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has initiated a major recruitment effort, offering 46,000 teaching positions, primarily for Junior Secondary Schools, in response to ongoing staffing shortages.

This announcement, made public in the government's MyGov bulletin on Tuesday, October 1, comes after a period of uncertainty and intense pressure from teachers' unions, which resulted in strikes in August. Teachers, many of whom were working under internship contracts, had been demanding confirmation to permanent and pensionable terms.

Of the 46,000 positions, 6,000 are reserved for primary schools, 39,550 for Junior Secondary, and 450 for secondary schools.

Application Process:

Candidates must meet specific criteria: a P1 certificate for primary schools and a diploma in education for Junior and secondary schools. All applicants must also be registered with the TSC. Applications are to be submitted online via the TSC website by October 7, 2024.

The recruitment follows a reversal by President William Ruto, who had initially frozen teacher hiring in June. After protests and a budget reshuffle, Ksh18.6 billion was allocated to employ 46,000 teachers on permanent terms.

This effort is part of Ruto's broader goal to address the teacher shortfall, with plans to hire 56,000 teachers in total.
