Several people are feared dead following a tragic road accident that occurred at Kipsitet Area in Koguta along the Nakuru-Muhoroni Highway on Monday. The accident happened when a Londiani-bound lorry lost control after hitting a pothole and collided with a 14-seater matatu traveling to Kisumu.

Preliminary reports indicate that about thirteen people lost their lives, with several others sustaining critical injuries. Rescue teams, including police officers and local residents, quickly responded to the scene to assist those trapped in the wreckage.

Footage circulating on social media shows the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) extensively damaged, with shattered windows and debris scattered across the road. The lorry involved in the collision was also severely damaged, leaning to one side with its windscreen completely shattered.

Kericho County Commander Geoffrey Mayek confirmed the incident and revealed that the driver of the lorry fled the scene after causing the accident. He also mentioned that an investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the tragedy. The deceased have been moved to St. Vincent Mission Hospital.

This Muhoroni tragedy comes just two days after another deadly accident at the Nithi Bridge along the Nairobi-Meru highway, where 12 people lost their lives. Tharaka Nithi County Police Commander Zacchaeus Ng'eno confirmed that the victims in that incident were returning from a parental blessing ceremony in Meru. The driver, unfamiliar with the highway, was reportedly driving on the wrong lane when the crash occurred.
