On Tuesday, August 20, the Senate confirmed the impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, effectively ending her tenure as the county's chief executive.

The decision came after a Senate vote, with Speaker Amason Kingi announcing the results.

"Under Article 181 of the Constitution, Section 33 of the County Government Act, and Standing Order 86 of the Senate Standing Orders, the Senate has resolved to remove from office by impeachment Hon. Kawira Mwangaza, the Governor of Meru County. The governor, therefore, ceases to hold office," Speaker Kingi stated following the vote.

Governor Mwangaza's removal sets off a series of constitutional processes as outlined in Kenya's governance framework.
