New allegations have surfaced in the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, suggesting that influential officials from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party played a significant role in orchestrating her removal from office.

As Governor Mwangaza faces impeachment for the third time, Advocate Elias Mutuma, representing her in the Senate plenary, raised concerns about political interference in the process. He reiterated the governor's previous claims that she was being targeted by political forces within Meru County.

"The governor was here last year, and she's here again this year, and her defense has always been that she's being targeted by the political leadership of Meru," Mutuma stated, questioning whether there was evidence of such influence in the current proceedings.

In a striking revelation, Evans Mawira, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Mitunguu Ward in South Imenti Constituency, confirmed that UDA officials were indeed involved in the efforts to impeach the governor. Mawira claimed that after local political leaders perceived Governor Mwangaza as having "gone rogue," UDA party members were mobilized to withdraw their support for her.

"I was personally called by the UDA party coordinator. We met with the chair of MPs' Caucus, Hon. Rindikiri and Hon. Kathuri Murungi, and we made a decision to communicate to other UDA members that it is the position of the party to withdraw all support for the governor," Mawira stated.

These accusations add a new dimension to the impeachment saga in Meru County, where Governor Mwangaza, elected on an independent ticket, continues to assert that her removal is politically motivated.

The Senate is set to conclude hearings on Tuesday, August 20, after which it will review the evidence and decide on the proposal to remove Governor Mwangaza from office through impeachment.
