The Government of Kenya has been ordered to pay Ksh.441 million in compensation to the families of the 147 students who died in the April 2, 2015 terror attack at Garissa University.
On Wednesday, the High Court further ordered the state to pay Ksh.56.9 million in compensation to the survivors of the terror attack, who endured physical and psychological effects as a result of the devastating event.
Each family of a deceased person will receive Ksh.3 million, while survivors were granted varying amounts of compensation.
In 2019, students, families, and Kituo Cha Sheria sued the government, security agencies, and the college for failing to take steps to stop the attack despite having useful intelligence.
A three-judge bench determined that the state had the responsibility of protecting the students during the attack and, due to its failure, students lost their lives and their constitutional rights were violated.
The court also found that the state contravened the law in deploying officers to Garissa University.
