Reports emerged on Tuesday, April 23, of a multi-storey building collapse in Nyamira County, following heavy rainfall that triggered flooding in the area.
A statement from the Kenya Red Cross indicated that several individuals were feared trapped in the debris of the collapsed five-storey building in Gesima, Nyamira County. Search and rescue efforts were immediately initiated.
According to a reporter at the scene, the building was unoccupied at the time of its collapse, having been condemned in 2014 with construction halted. However, individuals in adjacent structures were affected by the incident.
Although there were no fatalities reported initially, three individuals sustained serious injuries. Emergency responders managed to rescue two minors and a 40-year-old man from the rubble, who were subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Fortunately, their injuries were reported as minor.
Police officers and other emergency personnel remain on-site, continuing rescue operations to ensure the safety of any individuals who may still be trapped beneath the debris.
