Several students from Moi University sustained injuries after their bus was involved in a harrowing road accident at Kimende along the Naivasha-Nairobi Highway on Wednesday, March 27.
According to initial reports, the students were embarking on an academic trip to Mombasa when the unfortunate incident occurred.
Eyewitnesses recounted how the university bus veered off the road, overturning and causing injuries to those on board.
Prompt response from local residents facilitated the swift rescue of the students and the driver, with assistance arriving from police and emergency services soon after.
Amidst the chaos, some students were observed escaping through the windows of the overturned bus, while concerned locals endeavored to lift the vehicle to check for any individuals trapped underneath.
As of the latest updates, no fatalities have been reported, although authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the accident.
Investigations into the cause of the incident are underway, while injured students receive medical attention at nearby hospitals.
This unfortunate event comes in the wake of another tragic bus accident involving Kenyatta University students, which occurred in Voi, Taita Taveta County, on Monday, March 18. In that incident, a collision between the university bus and a trailer resulted in the loss of 11 lives and left several others injured.
In response to the recent surge in road accidents, resulting in the loss of approximately 30 lives across the country, the Ministry of Transport announced new measures aimed at enhancing road safety.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen disclosed the reinstatement of National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officials to bolster road monitoring and enforcement.
Furthermore, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki proposed the implementation of an age limit for driving licenses, citing concerns over road safety, particularly among elderly drivers.
"There are individuals whose ability to drive may be compromised due to age or health conditions. Currently, there are minimal restrictions based on age or health. In some countries, licenses cannot be renewed for individuals aged over 70," remarked Kindiki, underscoring the need for proactive measures to mitigate road accidents.
