Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah narrowly escaped a life-threatening assault on Friday, March 22, as armed assailants pursued him shortly after departing from Busia Law Courts.
Recounting the harrowing experience to the press, Omtatah disclosed that he noticed a suspicious vehicle tailing him as he made his way home.
Before long, the vehicle overtook him, and a group of youths emerged, launching a volley of stones at his car. Swiftly reacting, Omtatah instructed his driver to accelerate, seeking refuge at the heavily guarded Busia Agricultural Training College (ATC) under Administration Police protection.
"My driver managed to speed into the ATC premises, which is secured by AP guards, allowing me to seek shelter there. The police swiftly arrived and escorted me to safety," he recounted, noting that despite the assault, he emerged unscathed, with only minor damage inflicted upon his vehicle.
The senator underscored that the attack occurred amidst his pursuit of legal action against the county government, seeking vital information for oversight purposes.
"I had filed a lawsuit against the governor, demanding crucial details regarding county operations and expenditures. Despite sending multiple letters requesting this information, I received no response. Hence, I resorted to legal recourse," Omtatah clarified.
He voiced suspicions that the assailants were orchestrated by vested interests aiming to thwart his efforts, alleging their possession of crude weapons during the attack.
"It's evident that these goons were armed and had meticulously planned their assault. Fortunately, the absence of traffic allowed me to evade their attack," he remarked, citing eyewitness accounts of the assailants wielding machetes.
As investigations into the incident unfold, Senator Omtatah remains resolute in his pursuit of justice, undeterred by the brazen attempt on his life.
