Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, speaking on Thursday, March 21, disclosed the government's stance on the regulation of TikTok, emphasizing the need for compliance with Kenyan laws.

In his appearance before the Public Petitions Committee, Kindiki revealed that the government had formally communicated its concerns to TikTok's parent company, ByteDance Limited. The company was urged to address the issues raised, with potential administrative action looming should they fail to comply.

However, Kindiki underscored the importance of a thorough assessment before considering a ban on TikTok in Kenya. He stressed the necessity of evaluating both the risks and benefits associated with such a decision, highlighting the need for evidence-based policymaking.

"It's premature to conclude that the risks outweigh the benefits. We must develop a policy framework grounded in evidence to determine the balance," he stated.

While acknowledging the misuse of platforms like TikTok by criminals, Kindiki cautioned against hasty actions, citing the importance of following due process and considering the perspectives of all stakeholders.

During the session, concerns were raised about other jurisdictions banning TikTok over security concerns. Kindiki assured that his ministry was evaluating all options comprehensively, emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity in safeguarding national interests.

"Our ministry oversees the country's cybersecurity program. We must invest in internal security and defense strategies, including cyberspace defense, to protect our nation," he asserted.

He urged for a balanced approach, advocating for long-term solutions rather than quick fixes, to address the challenges posed by platforms like TikTok.

As discussions continue, the government remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens in cyberspace.
