Matatu operators in Nairobi have announced their intention to go on strike due to feeling excluded from the city's upgrade program led by the Nairobi City County.

According to the operators, recent tarmacking projects at various city termini have significantly disrupted their services.

As of the time of this publication, the specific dates for the strike have not been confirmed, but residents are advised to prepare for possible disruptions in the coming days.

The operators expressed frustration that the renovation of city walkways occurred without prior notice, making it difficult for them to adjust to alternative termini.

Citing disregard for constitutional requirements, the operators accused the county government of carrying out renovations without considering their input.

Renovation projects along Tom Mboya Street, Rover Road, Latema Road, and Accra Road were highlighted as particularly problematic for matatu operations.

Operators demanded an immediate halt to renovations on these critical roads, citing the creation of flower beds and road barricades, which hinder their business operations.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja previously announced an Ksh8.7 billion deal with the US government aimed at infrastructural development, including city walkways construction, under the partnership with the Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

Sakaja emphasized that the program encompasses various aspects such as transport and land use development planning, walkways, cycle paths, Bus Rapid Transit financing, and commuter connectivity, envisioning a comprehensive transformation for the city upon its successful completion.
