The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has taken decisive action by provisionally suspending Kenyan athletes Norbert Kigen and Agnes Mueni Mutua for alleged use of prohibited substances, specifically testosterone. This suspension, effective from February 27, was initiated following the issuance of notices of allegation against both athletes.
AIU's regulations dictate that provisional suspensions prevent athletes from participating in any athletics competition until a final decision is reached on the allegations.
In addition to Kigen and Mutua, several other Kenyan athletes have faced provisional suspensions over the past year due to various doping-related issues. These include Caroline Chepkoech Kipkirui (Whereabouts Failure), Jackline Wambui, Sarah Chepchirchir, and Beatrice Toroitich, among others.
The AIU clarified that in doping cases, provisional suspensions are mandatory under the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules following adverse analytical findings for prohibited substances.
Sarah Chepchirchir notably faces her second doping ban after a previous suspension in 2019 following participation in the Tokyo Marathon. Similarly, marathoner Michael Njenga received an eight-year ban for testing positive for a prohibited substance.
Despite these setbacks, Kenyan athletes have continued to excel on the international stage. In the recent Tokyo Marathon, Kenya demonstrated its prowess by securing the top three positions, with Benson Kipruto claiming first place and setting a personal best time.
As the AIU continues to uphold integrity in athletics, these suspensions underscore the ongoing efforts to combat doping and maintain fair competition in the sport.
