Kenya Takes the Helm: Steering Global Tourism Competitiveness at the UNWTO Committee

In a significant development announced on Thursday, January 25, Kenya secured a triumphant victory by being elected as the Chair of the Committee on Tourism and Competitiveness at the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Alfred Mutua, the Tourism Cabinet Secretary, shared in a statement that Kenya emerged victorious over notable tourism-centric nations like Malta and Thailand to secure this pivotal position.

Kenya is poised to hold the chairmanship for a three-year term at the UNWTO, whose headquarters are situated in Spain. This strategic role grants Kenya the authority to shape global strategies and policies with the aim of enhancing international trade.

Cabinet Secretary Mutua expressed the historic significance of this achievement, emphasizing that it places Kenya in a crucial decision-making position regarding worldwide tourism matters. The vote reflects the trust that UNWTO member states have in Kenya's leadership capabilities and its potential to steer the organization's agenda on tourism competitiveness.

He affirmed, “This is a historic moment and an important win for Kenya as it puts us in a position of decision-making in matters that affect tourism across the globe. This vote demonstrates the confidence that UNWTO member states have in Kenya’s leadership and ability to steer the organization’s agenda on tourism competitiveness. We shall champion initiatives that will help in the creation of jobs, protecting of the planet as well as driving inclusive growth that can be felt and be impactful within communities.”

UNWTO Executive Director Zoritsa Urosevic attributed Kenya's success to its extensive experience in tourism, considering it is a premier destination for visitors globally. Urosevic stressed that Kenya's wealth of knowledge would contribute invaluable strategies to the organization for the improvement of tourism, a crucial revenue generator for numerous countries.

“I commend Kenya for its commitment to sustainable tourism development. As one of the important tourism economies in Africa, Kenya will bring valuable experience and expertise that will lead the Committee’s work in enhancing competitiveness and responsible tourism across UNWTO member countries,” she stated.

Kenya's campaign for the role leaned heavily on its tourism destinations and infrastructure, impressively showcasing the country's appeal to garner support for its bid.

Notably, Kenya's tourism sector has been on a recovery trajectory post-pandemic, emerging as one of the leading revenue generators for the country in 2023. Economic organizations project further revival, anticipating increased tourism activities and the implementation of a visa-free entry program.
