In a heartbreaking incident under investigation by the police, two siblings lost their lives due to electrocution in Riahiro village, Kandara, Murang'a County. Evalyne Waweru, 33, and her elder brother Titus Waweru, 44, succumbed to the electric shock, while their 64-year-old mother sustained severe burns while attempting to aid her children.
The police reports indicate that Evalyne Waweru was hanging clothes when the tragic incident occurred. Hearing her cry for help, her brother rushed to assist, unaware that he couldn't rescue her without proper equipment. It was revealed that the hanging line was connected to a power post and the brother's roof.
Upon witnessing the distressing scene of her children burning, the mother rushed to their aid, resulting in her sustaining burns in the process. Despite the efforts of villagers who arrived to help, the siblings had already succumbed to their injuries, while the injured mother was rushed to a local hospital.
Local authorities, accompanied by officials from the power utility firm Kenya Power, visited the scene to investigate the circumstances leading to the incident. The cause remains unclear, with questions arising about whether a nearby power line fell or if there was a fault in the drop line to the brother's house.
This tragic event follows a recent warning from the utility firm urging people to keep a safe distance from power lines, particularly during the heavy rains affecting various parts of the country. Kenyans are encouraged to report any faulty power lines to prevent such devastating incidents. Additionally, children have been cautioned against playing under transmission lines to ensure their safety.
