Nairobi, August 22, 2023 - The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has apprehended prominent businesswoman Nancy Kigunzu, famously known as Mathe wa Ngara, in a dramatic overnight operation carried out at a hotel in Nairobi's central business district.
Acting on intelligence gathered by the Anti-narcotics Unit, in collaboration with the Forensics and Cyber Crimes Units, DCI officers successfully located and detained Mathe wa Ngara, who had managed to evade capture for six days prior to the raid.
The suspect has now been transported to the DCI headquarters, where she is set to undergo extensive questioning regarding her alleged involvement in drug trafficking. This comes in the wake of a recent raid on her premises, yielding a staggering Ksh13.4 million in cash alongside quantities of illicit substances, suspected to be bhang.
An undisclosed source, deeply connected to the operation, revealed that Mathe wa Ngara's location was unmasked due to a phone call she made from her hideout. "A phone call she placed to an associate within Nairobi inadvertently exposed her whereabouts. She was also discovered attempting to manage legal matters from her temporary lodging," the source divulged.
The processing of Mathe wa Ngara is scheduled to take place today, culminating in her appearance before the court. Law enforcement officials are accusing her of playing a pivotal role in an intricate drug network that was cracked down upon just last week, as authorities intensify their efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks across the county.
Interestingly, on Monday, August 21, the day before her arrest, Mathe wa Ngara's legal representative, Lawyer Danstan Omari, filed an anticipatory bail application on her behalf. In the application, she contended that her arrest was a calculated ploy to undermine her legitimate business activities in Kenya and sought protection from potential detainment. Notably, she had recently reached out to Teresia Wanjiku, who was erroneously apprehended, to extend an apology, an action perceived by some as a brazen challenge to law enforcement.
Lawyer Omari petitioned the court for an injunction as part of the anticipatory bail process, a legal maneuver aimed at preemptively preventing her arrest.
As the investigation unfolds, Mathe wa Ngara's arrest reverberates as a significant development in the ongoing efforts to curb illicit drug activities within the region. The court proceedings will likely shed light on the extent of her alleged involvement in the narcotics trade and the subsequent implications for her business empire.
