Eldoret, August 16, 2023 - Uasin Gishu Senator and former Governor, Jackson Mandago, has been apprehended in Eldoret in connection to the mismanagement of the Ksh1 billion Finland and Canada scholarship fund. The arrest follows allegations of conspiracy to defraud parents and students, resulting in a scandal that left many hopeful families devastated.
Senator Mandago was taken into custody from his Eldoret residence, with authorities claiming he played a role in the controversial scholarship program that ended in disappointment for numerous parents and students.
The timing of the arrest coincided with President William Ruto's unequivocal statement that he would not offer protection to anyone implicated in the scholarship scandal. Police officers confirmed that they had been attempting to apprehend Senator Mandago since the previous day.
Despite assertions by the lawmaker that he had not gone into hiding and was willing to cooperate with the police investigation, his arrest was executed without warning.
While Senator Mandago maintains his innocence in the matter, President Ruto assured Uasin Gishu residents that the funds lost to the scandal would be fully reimbursed.
"It's disheartening to witness the misappropriation of funds meant for the education of young individuals in Uasin Gishu," President Ruto stated, vowing not to interfere with the ongoing police inquiry.
In the hours leading up to his arrest, Senator Mandago revealed that he had engaged with parents' representatives to discuss the process of refunding those affected by the scholarship scandal. However, a student named Mercy Tarus, who suffered financial losses due to the program, revealed that no compensation had been provided as of Wednesday, August 16.
Mercy Tarus expressed optimism that justice would prevail and those responsible for the mismanagement and financial losses would be held accountable.
As the investigation unfolds, Uasin Gishu residents and the broader community await further developments, hoping for a fair resolution to the scholarship scandal that left many aspiring students and their families disillusioned and financially burdened.
