In a poignant decision, the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition has opted to replace the planned anti-government protests, scheduled for Wednesday, with solidarity parades and vigils in memory of victims of police brutality. The coalition issued a statement on Monday, July 24, announcing the shift in approach as they seek to honor those who tragically lost their lives during previous demonstrations.

The coalition's decision aims to pay tribute to the reported 50 individuals who have lost their lives due to police brutality, with hundreds more sustaining severe injuries requiring medical treatment.

The statement from Azimio reads, "Rather than go to the streets for a peaceful demonstration as earlier announced, we will hold solidarity parades and vigil for victims of police brutality in various locations in all parts of the country."

During these vigils, Azimio is encouraging Kenyan citizens to actively participate by lighting candles and laying flowers as a mark of remembrance and respect for the victims. Attendees are also urged to say prayers and read out the names of those who have suffered due to police brutality. To facilitate this, the coalition will provide a comprehensive list of the victims ahead of the vigil.

Furthermore, the coalition is extending its proactive approach beyond Wednesday's events. Azimio has reached out to religious leaders, requesting them to dedicate Friday, Saturday, and Sunday prayers in remembrance of the victims who have suffered during peaceful demonstrations.

In an effort to seek justice and accountability, the coalition has announced its intention to furnish an expanded list of perpetrators of police brutality to the International Criminal Court. This move aims to amplify the cause on an international scale and hold those responsible for violence against peaceful protesters accountable.

By replacing street demonstrations with solemn parades and vigils, Azimio La Umoja Coalition seeks to emphasize the importance of peaceful remembrance and reflection on the victims of police brutality, reinforcing their commitment to promoting unity and non-violent means of expressing their grievances.
