Maurice Ogeta, a dedicated bodyguard of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, has experienced his fair share of risky situations while protecting his boss. However, the last three days have left him shaken and terrified as he endured a harrowing ordeal.
The ordeal began on a Wednesday morning during three-day protests called by the opposition. While at a carwash yard, Ogeta was suddenly abducted by unknown assailants who forcibly confined him in the boot of a Subaru. He was then interrogated and manhandled, making it clear that his captors were not ordinary criminals.
During his captivity, Ogeta was blindfolded and transferred to an undisclosed location, where he was confined to an empty room for 36 hours under the watchful eye of one officer. He endured relentless questioning about the protest route plan, Mr. Odinga's whereabouts, and the plans for demonstrations.
Despite his attempts to explain Mr. Odinga's absence due to illness, the captors were unsympathetic and continued to press for information. Ogeta's only sustenance during captivity was water, and he was given food only on the second day, but his appetite had waned due to the stressful conditions.
With mounting calls for his release, the High Court directed the Inspector-General of Police to ensure Ogeta's presentation in any court in the country. Following this intervention, Ogeta was finally released by hooded gunmen on the outskirts of Ruai at around 1 a.m. on Saturday.
Though relieved to be free, Ogeta returned home to find his car vandalized and some belongings missing, including his phone with sensitive information wiped clean.
Despite the traumatic experience, Ogeta expressed his gratitude to Kenyans, his family, and Mr. Odinga for their unwavering support throughout the ordeal. He urged those in positions of authority to refrain from subjecting innocent individuals to unnecessary drama and psychological torture.
The emotional toll was evident as Ogeta recounted how his family cried with relief upon seeing him safe. He shared that his bond with Mr. Odinga originated from their mutual involvement in sports and fitness activities.
As Ogeta begins to heal from this nightmarish experience, questions remain about the circumstances surrounding his abduction and the impact such events have on those involved.
