Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo has raised concerns that Kenya is regressing to the old days of the Moi regime, characterized by strict control and limited freedom of speech.

According to Senator Madzayo, Kenyans now have to be cautious about what they say in public, as they are unsure who might be listening, reminiscent of the era when former President Daniel Arap Moi ruled with an iron fist.

"We have gone back to the old days of the Moi era whenever a Kenyan used to speak; they had to look behind their shoulder to see whether someone else is listening," he expressed.

He further asserted that Kenya's democracy is at risk, with the freedom of speech facing serious threats.

"We are no longer like an independent country. This is a state that is captured," Senator Madzayo stated.

The Kilifi Senator went on to claim that parliament has been stifled, and bills are being pushed through without adequate debate and consideration by the legislators.

"I urge those people who are controlling power now, there is tomorrow, and leadership changes," he cautioned.

He added that the current leaders would not want to experience what they are subjecting others to.

This statement from Senator Madzayo comes amid a government crackdown on some Azimio leaders. The situation has raised concerns about the state of democracy and freedom of expression in the country, with some drawing parallels to the past era of authoritarian rule under President Moi.
