Why Azimio will no longer issue demo notice to police - Sifuna

Azimio la Umoja Coalition will no longer issue a protest notice to the police in the coming days, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has said.

Sifuna on Thursday said that there was no point in issuing a notice if the police will term them illegal.

"We have realized that as much as we have complied with the law and served the notice to the police, they will still unconstitutionally declare our protests illegal. So we will no longer issue notices going forward," he said.

Last week, ODM deputy party leader Wycliff Oparanya in the company of Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni and former CS Defence Eugene Wamalwa hand-delivered a letter to IG Koome notifying him of the planned demo.

Oparanya said they will deliver to County Commanders, sub-county Commanders and all other and all other offices across the 47 counties.

Going further, Senator Sifuna who doubles up as ODM Secretary general said that the Azimio coalition was law-abiding and went to an extent of serving all police stations within Nairobi with the demo notice.

"We have not seen any OCS standing before the press saying they have not received a notice. I can confirm that every single police station in Nairobi has been served with a notification of protest," he said.

However, the Senator has put Inspector General of police Japhet Koome and Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei on the spot for banning the demos despite having received the notices.

"The purpose of notification to police is to invite them to provide security and protect the protestors. Let us exercise our rights under article 37 of the constitution and the demos will happen anywhere anytime without notification," Sifuna said.

Azimio announced it will be holding its dawn-to-dusk protests on Mondays and Thursdays across the country.

However, IG  Koome banned the planned protests, saying no one will be allowed to hold demos.

Also, Nairobi police boss Bungei had warned the Azimio supporters against holding the protests terming them illegal.

Despite the declaration by the police, Azimio has held its two rallies and Thursday will be the third.
