A video of an individual purporting to be a top student admitting to rigging during the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations resurfaced on Saturday, January 21 - a day after the release of 2022 KCSE results.
The viral video shared widely on Twitter, Tiktok, Facebook and even WhatsApp platforms captured the individual admitting to having rigged the exams during an interview on Citizen TV.
A fact check conducted by Kenyans.co.ke, however, classified the video as misleading. It was doctored to taint the credibility of the Kenya National Examination Council and that of the Ministry of Education.
The original interview was conducted on April 23, 2022, after the then-Education Cabinet Secretary, George Omore Magoha released the 2021 KCSE results.
Victoria Rubadiri interviewed a top student, Jeriel Neda Obura, from Mang'u High School, who scored an A with a mean score of 87.167 points.
"I always believed in myself, but honestly I did not believe that I would lead in the country," he responded to Rubadiri.
"I want to pursue a course in medicine and maybe specialise in orthopaedics so that I can become a leader in the field someday," he added.
In the doctored video, an individual who edited Ndeda out of the clip and filled in his own likeness claimed that he used his mobile phone to access leakages for KCSE exams.
"I can't lie, I was not shocked. For me personally, it was a lit bit difficult as I had to stay up late after preps to make sure my phone was always charged," he stated in the doctored video.
"The next day, I had to wake up very early to make sure I got the leakage on time," the unidentified individual added.
Further, Rubadiri did not applaud him after admitting to exam malpractice allegations, as shared widely perceived in the doctored video.
In the 2021 KCSE results, Ndeda was the best in the country followed by Mukuha Timothy Kamau of Alliance High School with a mean score of 87.139, and Job Ngara of Mang’u High School with a mean score of 87.116.
However, in the 2022 KCSE results, Education CS did not name the top candidates. In the results released by Machogu on Friday, January 20, 1,140 candidates obtained an overall A grade in the KCSE 2022 exams compared to 1,138 in 2021.
173,345 candidates scored C+ and above, hitting the minimum university entry mark.
