A woman passed away on Monday, December 19, at Kangundo Sub-County Hospital while undergoing treatment.

The lady, aged 60, died shortly after being admitted to the Machakos County-based hospital. She was alleged to have consumed poison.

Reports detailed that she was under intense pressure to surrender Ksh300,000, which members of the group had raised throughout the year. Members reportedly held he accountable as she was the treasurer of the table banking group.

Her woes began after the group reconciled its books of accounts and suspected her of embezzling the money.

It was reported that the victim fled her home three days before she committed suicide.

Kangundo Sub-county police commander, Zacharia Bitok, confirmed that the victim succumbed to the poison.

“She was fighting for her life in the hospital after taking poison. But we have since lost her," Bitok affirmed.

Her husband lamented that, indeed, the group demanded Ksh300,000 from the late wife.

“After the group reconciled its books on Tuesday 13, she had promised to avail the money on Wednesday, December 14. However, she fled on that day without indicating her destination. We assumed she had gone to borrow money,” he remarked.

Three days later, on Sunday morning, December 18, the family found her handbag next to the cowshed.

"Her footprints led us to an abandoned house at the corner of the homestead, where she lay unconscious," he added.

The husband and some residents rushed her to a nearby hospital for first aid treatment and admission.

Her body was transferred to the Kangundo Sub-County Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
