President Uhuru Kenyatta has expressed confidence in the electoral process after casting his vote in Gatundu South constituency, Kiambu county.

Speaking to the media after voting on Tuesday, August 9, the President stated that the process was smooth, urging Kenyans to turn up in large numbers and vote.

He also added that Kenyans should give the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) time and space to tally and announce the results.

“It is every Kenyans hope that this election will be free and fair. The process was smooth. I wasn’t there for too long and the systems seemed to be working, so we just hope it continues like that for the rest of the day.

“This is a day of voting and we pray that Kenyans turn out to vote in peace and go back home to await for the results,” Uhuru stated.

Uhuru was accompanied by First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, who cast her vote early in the morning.

Earlier on, Uhuru’s mother – Mama Ngina Kenyatta- joined thousands of Gatundu South residents in exercising their democratic right even as she echoed the president’s rallying call to Kenyans.

“When every legitimate voter takes part in the voting process, we vest powers to the right people to lead this country.

“It is important for everyone to understand the importance of voting,” she stated.

The Head of State and the first ladies are among key leaders and government officials who have already cast their vote.

Other notable leaders that have taken part in the exercise include; Deputy President William Ruto, his running mate – Rigathi Gachagua, Azimio la Umoja’s running mate – Martha Karua, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and his Principal Secretary, Karanja Kibicho.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his wife, Mama Ida, are scheduled to cast their votes in Kibra Constituency a few minutes past 10 am.
