The DCI has unmasked one of the robbers caught in the Saturday night incident that saw two mobile money agents, a man and a woman, shot dead. 

The detectives stated that the suspect is part of a wider armed and dangerous gang that staged an attack at mobile money shops located at Adams market. 

The police called upon Kenyans to help in tracing the suspect’s whereabouts.

Police based in Kilimani are looking for two robbers who shot dead two traders at Adams Arcade market in Nairobi county. 

In a CCTV footage shows the armed robbers had targeted mobile money agents within the market though their plans were disrupted by a female trader who fought them off.

According to the video, 53-year-old Sophia Gathoni was preparing to close her shop when a ‘customer’ and his accomplice approached her seeking to buy cigarettes.

The trader, who directed them to another shop, was accosted by both men who removed pistols and aimed them at her. 

Gathoni rushed to hide inside the shop but the first robber opened fire on her. His colleague tried to force his way into the shop but Gathoni fought him off.

In the process, the armed robber shot her again, leaving her lying on the floor as she wailed for help. 

Another trader, who responded to the distress call, was also shot multiple times a few metres from Gathoni’s shop.

Nearby residents came to the aid of the traders and rushed them to Nairobi Women’s Hospital. They, however, succumbed to their injuries and excess loss of blood. 

Police officers privy to the matter have since collected the bullets removed from the bodies for ballistic examinations as they seek to identify the shooters. 

The video has caused an uproar online with Kenyans highlighting the state of insecurity in the city. They also called for justice for the traders’ families and speedy investigations for the perpetrators to be apprehended. 

The latest report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) revealed that Nairobi topped the list of most insecure counties in the country with 6,686 cases reported, which represented an increase of 14 per cent from 5,844 during the same period in 2020.

It was followed by Kiambu which registered 5,715 cases,
