Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi confronted police officers at the body’s headquarters in Lavington on Monday, August 2.

In a video seen, the LSK president is seen addressing two police officers in LSK offices.

According to Havi, the two police officers had locked up the board room, preventing a meeting he claimed was lawful.

Havi questioned the presence of the cops at the LSK offices who claimed to be following orders from above.

One of the officers told Havi that they were on assignment and that he should talk to the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Muthangari. He proceeded to ask the officers to leave the premises.

“I am not afraid of guns. I am asking you to leave,” Havi told the two officers, “Please leave. This is private property.”

He further called out the move by police for infringing on the internal management of affairs of the society

On July 30, LSK announced Josephat Mutunga Mutisya as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the secretary of the LSK Council.

Mutisya will replace Mercy Wambua whose term was supposed to expire on February 27, 2022. The LSK president announced the new CEO despite a petition filed in court by Wambua.

The outgoing CEO sued Havi for contempt of court claiming Havi had defied a court order in 2020 barring LSK from instituting leadership changes.

However, in a phone call, Havi defended the shortlisting of candidates. He explained that the council was mandated to look for a replacement at least six months before the term of the current CEO ends.

Julia Jakalia was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Council while Veronica Odipo would take over as Director of Practise and Standards.

On July 23, Havi dismissed claims that LSK offices had been shut down by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers. He indicated that the offices were closed to pave the way for fumigation.

Notably, at the time of publishing this article, the OCS at Muthangari Police Station had not given his response on the matter.
