FRANKFURT, Germany — A rare malaria outbreak at Frankfurt Airport has turned deadly, with one airport employee dying after contracting the disease in what health authorities believe may be a case of “airport malaria” — an infected mosquito arriving in a malaria-free country on an aircraft.
The worker is one of six airport employees now known to have contracted malaria in the outbreak.
Five others remain under medical care, according to Fraport, the company that operates Frankfurt Airport.
The new cases were confirmed after Germany's Robert Koch Institute (RKI) had initially reported four infections among airport workers in July.
Fraport confirmed the death on Wednesday.
“Sadly, we must confirm that one employee has died as a result of the infection,” a Fraport spokesperson said, according to reports.
The company expressed its condolences to the employee's family and said it had informed airport staff about the outbreak.
The incident is particularly unusual because the worker had no apparent need to have contracted malaria through travel to a malaria-endemic country.
Instead, investigators believe an infected mosquito may have travelled into Germany on an aircraft, potentially in cargo or baggage, before biting workers at or around the airport. German public broadcaster Hessenschau reported that the RKI and Fraport had confirmed the suspected link.
A mosquito becomes the centre of the investigation
The suspected route of transmission is known as airport malaria.
It is extremely uncommon.
The RKI has described this form of malaria transmission as very rare. It occurs when an infected mosquito is inadvertently transported by aircraft or luggage from an area where malaria is present, then survives long enough to bite people at the destination.
German health authorities believe the mosquito or mosquitoes involved in the Frankfurt cases may have arrived in July.
Investigators are now trying to establish exactly what happened.
Fraport has installed mosquito traps around the airport. Captured mosquitoes will be examined in laboratories to determine their species and whether they carry malaria parasites.
The investigation is important because finding the mosquito could help authorities establish whether the infections were linked to a single imported insect or another route of transmission.
For now, officials have not reported evidence of ordinary person-to-person transmission.
The Frankfurt Health Department has stressed that human-to-human transmission does not play a role in airport malaria.
Why malaria can be missed in Germany
Malaria is usually associated with tropical and subtropical regions, particularly sub-Saharan Africa.
In Germany, most cases are linked to people who acquired the infection while travelling in countries where malaria is endemic.
That makes cases among airport workers particularly unusual.
The absence of a travel history can also make diagnosis more difficult.
A person who develops fever after working at an airport may not immediately think of malaria, especially in a country where the disease is not routinely transmitted.
That delay can be dangerous.
The WHO says the early symptoms of malaria can include fever, headache and chills, and they may initially appear mild. Infections caused by Plasmodium falciparum, the most dangerous malaria parasite, can deteriorate rapidly if treatment is delayed.
The RKI has previously warned that the lack of a travel history can contribute to delayed diagnosis in airport malaria cases.
Fraport is now urging employees who develop possible malaria symptoms to seek medical attention and tell doctors that they work at the airport.
Six workers infected, one dead
The first four cases became public in July.
According to the RKI's epidemiological reporting, the initial patients became ill between July 4 and July 6, 2026.
At the time, investigators linked the infections to the workers' activities at Frankfurt Airport, including baggage-handling operations.
Two additional cases have since been identified, bringing the total number of infected employees to six.
One has now died.
The five other affected employees are receiving medical treatment, Fraport said.
There is no indication from the current reports that the outbreak has spread beyond the airport workforce.
How serious is malaria?
Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites and is transmitted mainly through bites from infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.
It is not spread through ordinary contact between people.
The WHO says malaria is both preventable and curable, but untreated infection can become life-threatening.
Globally, an estimated 282 million people contracted malaria in 2024, while about 610,000 people died from the disease. About 95 per cent of both cases and deaths were recorded in the WHO African Region.
The disease is therefore familiar across much of Africa, but an outbreak caused by an imported mosquito in a European airport is a very different scenario.
For people without partial immunity to malaria, infection can progress quickly.
WHO recommends prompt testing for suspected cases and effective treatment once malaria is confirmed. Artemisinin-based combination therapies are among the main treatments for P. falciparum malaria.
Frankfurt has seen airport malaria before
The current outbreak is not the first time Frankfurt Airport has been associated with this rare form of malaria.
The RKI has previously recorded an airport malaria case at Frankfurt in 2023.
That history is one reason health authorities are treating the latest infections seriously, even though airport malaria remains exceptionally uncommon.
A European study examining airport and baggage-associated malaria cases from 1969 to 2024 identified 145 cases across Europe, including nine in Germany, according to Euronews' reporting on the current outbreak.
The numbers underline how unusual the Frankfurt incident is.
But the fatality also shows why rare does not mean harmless.
What happens next?
The immediate priority is to identify the source of the infections and ensure affected workers receive treatment.
Mosquito traps will be analysed to establish what species were captured and whether any carried malaria parasites.
Airport employees have also been warned to watch for symptoms and seek medical attention promptly.
The investigation will also help authorities determine whether additional measures are necessary around aircraft, cargo and baggage-handling areas.
For travellers, however, there is no current evidence in the reports that Frankfurt Airport is experiencing widespread malaria transmission among passengers.
The concern is centred on the rare possibility of infected mosquitoes being transported into a malaria-free area and subsequently biting people.
The case is a reminder of a broader public-health reality: infectious diseases do not respect borders, and modern air travel can move people — and occasionally disease-carrying insects — across continents within hours.
For the family of the deceased worker, however, the incident is no longer a rare epidemiological event.
It is a personal tragedy.
And for health authorities, the task now is to make sure the suspected mosquito does not become the beginning of a larger problem.
