Global markets watch oil, bonds and Nvidia

Global investors are turning their attention to Nvidia as markets look for fresh clues about the strength of the technology and artificial-intelligence boom.

Global equities rose on Tuesday as investors awaited Nvidia’s latest financial results, while government bond yields declined and oil prices fell.

Wall Street ended higher, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 0.30%, the S&P 500 gaining 0.32% and the Nasdaq climbing 0.66%. The moves came as investors positioned themselves ahead of Nvidia’s results and fresh US economic data.

Nvidia has become one of the most closely watched companies in the global market because of its dominant position in chips used to power artificial-intelligence systems.

Its latest results are expected to provide investors with another indication of whether the enormous investment in AI infrastructure is translating into sustained demand.

Oil prices also fell sharply. US crude settled at about $82.36 a barrel, while Brent crude settled at approximately $88.58, after investors assessed the potential impact of US pressure on Iran and broader concerns about global oil supplies.

The movement in oil prices matters beyond financial markets. For countries such as Kenya, international energy prices can influence transport costs, inflation and the prices of imported goods.

Investors are also watching US inflation data and signals from the Federal Reserve as they assess the future direction of interest rates.

Why it matters: What happens in global markets can eventually filter into the Kenyan economy through fuel prices, the shilling, imports, investments and the cost of borrowing.
