Saumu Mbuvi, daughter of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, has issued a firm public statement after she was incorrectly linked to a widely shared video depicting a private family dispute.

In a message posted to her Instagram Stories, Ms Mbuvi said she was “frustrated” by how quickly her name had been drawn into the controversy, calling the claims misleading and harmful.

“This is inaccurate and unwarranted,” she wrote. “I am not the woman in that video so bloggers, media platforms and individuals should refrain from using my name and images in relation to the incident.”

Her statement came as speculation spread rapidly across social media, prompting her to clarify that the woman shown was not her, but a family member. She called for restraint, noting that the situation involved “sensitive family matters” and deserved respect.

Ms Mbuvi said she would not issue further comments, describing the issue as one that required privacy and understanding. “I will not be commenting further on this matter due to its sensitive nature,” she said. “Thank you to everyone for understanding.”

A Call for Responsible Reporting

Beyond correcting misinformation, Ms Mbuvi expressed disappointment at how quickly inaccurate claims had taken hold online. She urged bloggers, influencers and media outlets to act responsibly when reporting on delicate personal issues, especially those involving families.

“I wish to firmly and unequivocally condemn all forms of gender-based violence,” she added, distancing herself from the video while also speaking to a broader national concern. “I do not, and will never, support any act of violence in any capacity.”

Her remarks align with ongoing campaigns in Kenya and around the world that call attention to the human cost of gender-based violence. Activists consistently highlight the need for survivor protection, accountability for offenders and accurate, compassionate public discourse.

Misinformation and a Wider Concern

The incident has stirred wider conversations about how quickly misinformation spreads on social media and how easily public figures become entangled in narratives that do not involve them.

For Ms Mbuvi, the episode served as a reminder that digital speculation can inflict real harm, especially when private matters become public without consent.

Her statement reinforced a plea that stories involving sensitive relationships and violence should be handled with care, accuracy and empathy—values she has long championed in her advocacy work on women’s mental health and safety.
