Eddie Butita, once known for his comedic prowess on stage and screen, has seamlessly transitioned into a multifaceted entrepreneur in Kenya's entertainment industry.
Gone are the days of stand-up comedy shows and writing scripts for fellow comedians like Churchill and Eric Omondi. Today, clad in a bespoke Caribbean shirt and directing a crew of ten in a Nairobi go-down, Butita is at the helm of his own creative empire, Stage Presence Media (SPM Buzz).
His journey began with humble beginnings in Kariobangi, where irregular graphic design jobs paved the way for his breakthrough on Churchill Show in 2012. Butita's knack for satire and creative writing soon led to lucrative opportunities, including scripting for Netflix's Swahili comedy show and collaborating with comedian Njugush on popular stand-up specials.
The Covid-19 pandemic became a pivotal moment for Butita, prompting him to leverage his massive social media following for brand influencing and launching SPM Buzz from his bedroom. Initially a makeshift office with just a few microphones, SPM Buzz has now grown to employ 14 full-time staff and serves as a comprehensive content hub specializing in production, digital media, and creative strategies.
Butita's entrepreneurial journey hasn't been without challenges—learning on the go without formal business education led to significant financial setbacks. Despite losses amounting to millions, his resilience and commitment to reinvention have seen SPM Buzz thrive, attracting major clients and expanding its influence in the industry.
Recent highlights include accompanying President William Ruto to Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, a trip that not only garnered social media buzz but also underscored Butita's growing influence and business acumen in entertainment.
As he continues to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship, Butita remains focused on innovating and expanding his creative footprint, embodying the spirit of resilience and adaptation in Kenya's dynamic entertainment landscape.
