Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia has been released from Kamukunji Police Station after spending the night in police custody, bringing a temporary end to a dramatic sequence of events that has drawn political attention and renewed debate over due process.

The legislator walked out of the police station on Tuesday morning after securing his release. He was welcomed by supporters and fellow political leaders who had gathered outside the station following his detention.

Police had not issued a detailed statement explaining the circumstances of his release or whether any charges would be preferred against him by the time he left custody.

Kaguchia's arrest followed an operation on Monday morning outside the Royal Media Services premises, where he had remained overnight after appearing on an Inooro TV programme. Before his arrest, the MP said he had chosen to stay inside the media house after learning that armed, masked officers were waiting outside.

Speaking before he was taken into custody, Kaguchia maintained that he was prepared to cooperate with investigators but wanted any arrest to follow established legal procedures.

"If there is anything that government has on me, I'm not fearful of presenting myself to authorities to answer any question... but not through unprocedural means," he said.

He also linked the police action to remarks he made during a recent political rally, saying he believed they had been portrayed as inflammatory. Kaguchia argued that if concerns existed over his statements, the matter should be handled through the appropriate legal institutions.

His detention prompted opposition leaders and lawyers to gather outside the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters on Monday, where they called for access to the legislator and urged investigators to follow due process.

Among those who addressed the media were Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo and National Assembly Deputy Minority Leader Robert Mbui, who said any investigations should proceed within the framework of the law and that Kaguchia should be granted access to legal representation.

The arrest has since sparked wider public discussion on policing practices, constitutional rights and the handling of investigations involving elected leaders.

It remains unclear whether investigators intend to take further action against the MP. Authorities have yet to announce whether he will face charges or whether investigations are continuing.
