A security investigation is underway in California after authorities arrested a 38-year-old man who was allegedly found carrying a firearm and prohibited ammunition near President Donald Trump’s golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes ahead of his planned visit to the property.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Jeanine John Taele was arrested after federal agents reported a suspicious individual moving around the Trump National Golf Club, taking photographs and videos and appearing to monitor security-related activities.

The arrest has raised fresh questions about presidential security, especially as Trump continues to make public appearances outside traditional government locations. However, authorities have not said that Taele was planning an attack against the president, and he is not facing charges related to an alleged threat against Trump.

Investigators said Taele was found with a concealed firearm and ammunition, including a magazine containing hollow-point rounds. A search of his vehicle reportedly uncovered a loaded pistol and additional ammunition.

The investigation expanded after authorities searched his home in Downey, California, where officials said they discovered an illegally modified AR-style rifle, a .45-calibre pistol, body armour, high-capacity magazines and large quantities of ammunition. Investigators also found notebooks containing what they described as “concerning statements”, although the contents have not been publicly released.

Authorities are now working to determine whether the items recovered from the suspect’s home were connected to any wider security concern. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau and the US Secret Service are assisting with the investigation.

The incident comes at a time when security around Trump remains under intense scrutiny following previous attempts on his life during his political campaigns. The Secret Service has faced increased pressure to review and strengthen protection measures as Trump continues to travel for political and fundraising events.

Private venues such as golf clubs present unique challenges for presidential security because they combine personal spaces, public gatherings and political activities. Unlike the White House, which has a permanent security structure, private properties require extensive planning and coordination between federal, state and local agencies.

Trump was visiting California for a Republican fundraising dinner at the Rancho Palos Verdes golf course, where he was expected to deliver remarks criticising California Governor Gavin Newsom. The visit comes as political activity builds ahead of the November midterm elections, which will determine control of the US Congress.

Officials have stressed that there is currently no confirmed threat to Trump or the surrounding community. However, the investigation remains active, and authorities say additional charges could follow depending on the evidence gathered.

The case highlights the continuing challenge facing US security agencies as they protect a president whose movements often combine official duties, political events and appearances at privately owned locations. For Trump’s security team, the incident will likely provide another opportunity to review procedures and assess potential vulnerabilities ahead of future engagements.
