Kisumu police have arrested a woman seen in a viral video violently attacking two businesswomen with a wooden rod at Kibuye Market. Authorities say the assault was linked to ongoing disputes over market leadership.
The incident occurred on November 17 at around 4 p.m., when the two traders were holding a chama meeting near their stalls. A group of ten individuals reportedly confronted them, allegedly led by the market chairlady.
According to a police report filed at Kondele Police Station, the chairlady struck one of the women with a wooden rod while another participant attacked the second victim. “Both victims sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Lumumba Sub-County Hospital for treatment,” the report said. They have since been discharged.
In footage obtained by the media, the chairlady is seen striking one of the women while she lies on the ground, defenseless. The video quickly went viral, sparking public outrage and prompting police action.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), accompanied by Kondele Police, visited the scene shortly after the attack but found the group had fled. The chairlady was later arrested and booked at Kisumu Railways Station. Police said additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
“The incident is a serious criminal attack, and we are committed to ensuring all involved face justice,” a Kondele Police spokesperson said. Authorities are still searching for other members of the group who participated in the assault.
The arrested chairlady is expected to be arraigned in court once the investigation concludes. Police have urged the public to report any additional information that could assist in identifying and apprehending the remaining suspects.
