Bondo, Kenya —
As Kenya prepares to lay former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to rest, Siaya Governor James Orengo has urged mourners to uphold peace and respect during the final leg of the national farewell.

Speaking on Saturday, October 18, 2025, Orengo appealed for restraint as growing crowds gathered in Kisumu and Bondo to accompany the late opposition leader’s body on its last journey home.

“I know that shortly Raila’s remains are going to be brought here in Bondo, to the final resting place,” Orengo said. “When the body arrives, it will be here in the home — not for viewing but for family and other close relatives. Otherwise, there’s a place that has been set aside just across where the members of the public and the community in Siaya will be able to view the body of our departed leader.”

The governor’s remarks came amid heightened emotions in Nyanza, where thousands had filled Mamboleo Showground in Kisumu earlier in the day for a final public viewing. The body, draped in the Kenyan flag, was flown in by a Kenya Defence Forces helicopter from Nairobi’s Lee Funeral Home after days of national mourning.

Security and logistics
Security agencies maintained a visible presence across Kisumu and Siaya counties to control swelling crowds. The Kenya Defence Forces and National Police Service coordinated movement along major routes, while the funeral committee, chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, adjusted plans to ensure safety and order.

The change of venue to Mamboleo Stadium — instead of the previously announced site — helped prevent congestion and possible stampedes. The ODM party reinforced the call for calm, urging mourners to avoid speeches and focus on honouring Raila in quiet reflection.

A nation’s tribute
As the day unfolded, tributes poured in from across the country. Former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa led a delegation from the Luhya community in presenting bulls to the Odinga family — a traditional mark of respect. He was joined by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, who spoke of the enduring friendship between western Kenya and the Odingas.

Other leaders, including Thirdway Alliance’s Ekuru Aukot and Raila’s elder brother, Senator Oburu Odinga, echoed Orengo’s call for dignity and discipline during the burial events.

“This is not just a family mourning; it is a national moment,” Aukot said. “Let us honour Raila in the spirit of peace and unity he always preached.”

Final farewell
Raila Odinga will be buried at Kang’o ka Jaramogi, beside his parents, in accordance with his wish to be interred within 72 hours of his death — a request that has drawn wide admiration for its simplicity and decisiveness.

The funeral marks the end of an era in Kenyan politics and the closing chapter of a man whose influence spanned generations.
